The Same Flow Does Not Mean the Same Application
For clean-water pumps, flow and head often provide a good starting point for selecting a pump. Slurry pumps require more information.
A slurry containing fine mineral particles behaves differently from a slurry containing large, heavy, and highly abrasive particles.
For example, consider two applications with the same required flow:
- Application A: fine particles with relatively low abrasiveness
- Application B: coarse, highly abrasive mineral particles
The required pump capacity may be similar, but the wear conditions can be completely different.
This is where impeller design and material become important.
The Impeller Has to Match the Slurry
The impeller must transfer energy to the slurry while handling the solids passing through the pump.
If the slurry contains coarse particles, the pump needs suitable internal passages and a robust hydraulic design. If the slurry is highly abrasive, the impeller material must also be selected according to the expected wear conditions.
In many mining applications, high-chrome alloy impellers are selected for their resistance to abrasive wear. In other applications, rubber or other materials may be more appropriate depending on particle characteristics and chemical compatibility.

The Pump Selection Process Should Start With the Slurry
Before recommending a slurry pump, we normally want to understand more than just the required capacity.
Important information includes:
- Flow rate
- Total head
- Slurry density
- Solids concentration
- Particle size
- Particle shape
- Slurry pH or chemical characteristics
- Required operating hours
- Suction conditions
- Expected wear conditions
With this information, the pump model, speed, impeller configuration, material, and motor power can be evaluated together.
A Good Pump Is Not Just a Big Pump
Sometimes customers believe that selecting a larger pump or a larger motor will provide additional safety.
However, oversizing does not automatically mean better performance.
A properly selected pump should operate close to its intended duty point while providing sufficient capacity for the actual application. The impeller diameter and pump speed should be selected accordingly.
In other words, the goal is not to choose the biggest pump. The goal is to choose the right pump.

Slurry pumping systems can vary significantly from one mine or processing plant to another.
That is why experienced pump manufacturers normally ask for detailed operating data before recommending a final configuration.
